CHESTERFIELD — The Chesterfield Select Board discussed an acute Highway Department staffing crisis on May 27, identifying competitive wages as the chief factor driving departures. Chair Roger Fuller stated the town must hire at least two workers immediately and a third in late fall, noting that the State currently offers $37 per hour to start, above Chesterfield's posted highway rates, and that younger workers show little interest in laborer positions. The board plans to meet in executive session with the Finance Committee to discuss recruitment budget numbers ahead of the next Select Board meeting on June 2.
